Introduction

Ledger® Live is the official companion application for Ledger hardware wallets (Nano S, Nano X, and others). This guide explains how to download and install Ledger Live, set up or restore a device, log in securely, add and manage accounts, and follow essential security best practices.

Tip: only download Ledger Live from official Ledger sources (links below). Never share your recovery phrase with anyone.

Step 1 — Download & Install Ledger Live

Where to get Ledger Live

Always download Ledger Live from Ledger's official site or the official app stores. Use the desktop installer for most users and the mobile app for on-the-go management.

Quick steps

  • Visit the official Ledger Live page and click Download.
  • Choose your platform (Windows/macOS/Linux/Android/iOS) and follow installer prompts.
  • On macOS, drag the app to /Applications as instructed.
What to verify

Check the download signatures if you want added assurance the installer is official.

Step 2 — Set up or restore your Ledger device

Initialize a new device

Power on your Ledger, choose to create a new wallet, set a PIN, and write down your 24-word recovery phrase on the supplied card — offline and in a secure place. This recovery phrase is the single most important secret for your funds.

Restore from a recovery phrase

If you already have a recovery phrase, choose the restore option on the device and enter the phrase using the device buttons.

Step 3 — Login to Ledger Live & connect your device

Open Ledger Live

Start Ledger Live, choose "Get started" and follow on-screen prompts. Connect your device by USB or Bluetooth (Nano X), then unlock it with your PIN.

Confirm the connection

Ledger Live will request you to confirm the session on the physical device — always verify the address and actions on your device screen before approving.

Step 4 — Install apps & add accounts

Install coin apps

Use the Manager in Ledger Live to install the coin-specific applications (Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, etc.) on your device. Installed apps enable your device to derive & display addresses securely.

Add accounts

In Ledger Live, choose Add account and select the coin. Ledger Live will scan your device and show existing accounts; add the ones you want to manage.

Step 5 — Send, receive & manage crypto

Receiving funds

Create a receive address in Ledger Live and always verify the address on your hardware device screen before sharing it. Never paste an address without confirming it on-device.

Sending funds

Compose a transaction in Ledger Live. Confirm all details on your device where the transaction must be approved physically — this protects you if your computer is compromised.

Security & best practices

Never share your recovery phrase

Your 24-word recovery phrase must be kept offline and never typed into a website or an app. Ledger will never ask you for it.

Beware of fake apps & phishing

Only download Ledger Live from the official site and official app stores. Watch out for fake installers or cloned websites and never follow unsolicited recovery or support instructions sent by email or DMs.

Extra protections

  • Keep firmware and Ledger Live updated.
  • Use the device's PIN and enable its passphrase feature if you need a hidden wallet.
  • Store your recovery phrase in a physically secure place or use a metal backup solution.

Troubleshooting & tips

Device not recognized

Try another USB cable/port, restart the computer, or update USB drivers. If using a mobile device, ensure Bluetooth pairing completed and permissions are allowed.

App won't open or sync

Make sure Ledger Live and your device firmware are up to date. If necessary, consult the official support pages (links below).

Quick checklist: download official app → initialize or restore device → write recovery phrase offline → install coin apps → add accounts → verify addresses on device → sign transactions on device → keep backups secure.
